Eli Kalman is a renowned classical pianist and professor of music at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Born in Israel in 1968, Kalman began playing the piano at the age of six and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He went on to study at the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem, where he received his Bachelor of Music degree with honors. After completing his undergraduate studies, Kalman moved to the United States to pursue further education. He earned his Master of Music degree from the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied with the legendary pianist and teacher, Adele Marcus. Kalman then went on to earn his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Michigan, where he studied with renowned pianist and pedagogue, Louis Nagel. Throughout his career, Kalman has performed extensively as a soloist and chamber musician, both in the United States and abroad. He has appeared as a soloist with numerous orchestras, including the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra, and the Santa Barbara Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed in major concert halls around the world, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, and the Berlin Philharmonic Hall. In addition to his performing career, Kalman is also a highly respected teacher and scholar. He has taught at several prestigious institutions, including the University of Michigan, the University of Texas at Austin, and the University of California, Santa Barbara. He has also published numerous articles and essays on topics related to piano performance and pedagogy. One of the highlights of Kalman's career was his performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in 1992. The performance was highly acclaimed by critics and audiences alike, and helped to establish Kalman as one of the leading pianists of his generation. Another notable performance by Kalman was his recital at Carnegie Hall in 2001. The program included works by Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, and Liszt, and was praised by critics for its technical brilliance and emotional depth. Throughout his career, Kalman has received numerous awards and honors for his performances and recordings. In 1994, he was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which recognizes outstanding young musicians who show exceptional promise for a major career in music. He has also been a recipient of the Gilmore Young Artist Award, the Pro Musicis International Award, and the Andrew Wolf Chamber Music Award. In addition to his solo performances, Kalman is also an active chamber musician. He has collaborated with many of the world's leading musicians, including violinist Joshua Bell, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and pianist Emanuel Ax. He is a founding member of the Kalmanovitch-Kalman Duo, which has performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe. Kalman's recordings have also received critical acclaim. His recording of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1993. He has also recorded several solo albums, including a highly acclaimed recording of Chopin's complete Nocturnes. In addition to his performing and teaching career, Kalman is also a dedicated philanthropist.
