The Bowling Green State University Wind Symphony is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been entertaining audiences for over 50 years. Founded in 1968, the ensemble has become one of the most respected wind symphonies in the United States, known for its exceptional musicianship and innovative programming. The ensemble was founded by Dr. Bruce Moss, who served as its conductor for over 30 years. Under his leadership, the Wind Symphony quickly gained a reputation for excellence, performing at major music festivals and conferences across the country. Dr. Moss was succeeded by Dr. Carol Hayward, who continued to build on the ensemble's legacy of excellence. The Wind Symphony is made up of approximately 50 talented musicians, all of whom are students at Bowling Green State University. The ensemble is open to all students, regardless of major, and auditions are held each year to determine membership. The Wind Symphony is known for its diverse repertoire, which includes everything from traditional wind band music to contemporary works and world premieres. Over the years, the Wind Symphony has performed at some of the most prestigious music festivals and conferences in the country. In 1983, the ensemble was invited to perform at the Midwest Clinic, an annual music conference held in Chicago that attracts thousands of music educators and performers from around the world. The Wind Symphony has also performed at the College Band Directors National Association Conference, the American Bandmasters Association Convention, and the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles Conference. In addition to its performances at major conferences and festivals, the Wind Symphony has also been recognized for its outstanding musicianship. In 1995, the ensemble was awarded the Sudler Trophy, which is considered to be the highest honor a college or university wind ensemble can receive. The Sudler Trophy is awarded by the John Philip Sousa Foundation and is based on a number of factors, including the ensemble's performance history, repertoire, and contributions to the field of wind band music. The Wind Symphony has also been recognized for its commitment to new music. The ensemble has commissioned and premiered numerous works by contemporary composers, including David Maslanka, Michael Daugherty, and John Mackey. In 2015, the Wind Symphony premiered a new work by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Jennifer Higdon, which was commissioned in honor of the ensemble's 50th anniversary. In addition to its performances and awards, the Wind Symphony is also known for its commitment to music education. The ensemble regularly hosts workshops and clinics for high school and middle school students, providing them with the opportunity to work with and learn from some of the best wind musicians in the country. The Wind Symphony also collaborates with other ensembles and artists, including the Toledo Symphony Orchestra and the Canadian Brass.
