From a young age, Eriksson showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Eriksson's talent was quickly recognized, and he began studying at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm at the age of seven. He continued his studies there for the next ten years, honing his skills as a pianist and composer. In 1967, Eriksson made his debut as a solo pianist, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. The performance was a resounding success, and Eriksson quickly gained a reputation as one of the most promising young pianists in Sweden. Over the next few years, Eriksson continued to perform extensively throughout Sweden and Europe, earning critical acclaim for his virtuosic playing and sensitive interpretations of classical repertoire. In 1972, he won the prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, cementing his status as one of the world's leading pianists. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Eriksson continued to perform and record extensively, collaborating with some of the world's leading orchestras and conductors. In 1990, Eriksson suffered a serious injury to his right hand, which threatened to end his career as a pianist. Undeterred, he underwent extensive rehabilitation and retrained himself to play with his left hand. He continued to perform and record, adapting his repertoire to suit his new technique. In 2000, Eriksson was awarded the Polar Music Prize, one of the most prestigious awards in the music world. The award recognized his contributions to classical music and his pioneering spirit in overcoming his injury to continue performing at the highest level. Today, Eriksson continues to perform and record, inspiring audiences around the world with his passion and dedication to music. His legacy as one of the greatest pianists of his generation is secure, and his influence on the classical music world will be felt for generations to come.
