Richard Davy was a prominent English composer of the late medieval period, known for his contributions to the development of polyphonic music. Born in the early 1460s, little is known about his early life and musical training. However, it is believed that he was born in Norfolk, England, and may have received his musical education at the University of Oxford. Davy's career as a composer began in the late 1480s, when he was appointed as a singer at the Chapel Royal in London. This prestigious position allowed him to work alongside some of the most talented musicians of his time, including William Cornysh and John Taverner. During his time at the Chapel Royal, Davy composed a number of works for the royal court, including masses, motets, and hymns. One of Davy's most famous works is his St. Matthew Passion, a setting of the Gospel of Matthew that was likely composed in the early 1490s. This work is notable for its use of complex polyphonic textures, which were still relatively new in English music at the time. The St. Matthew Passion is also notable for its use of dramatic musical effects, such as sudden changes in tempo and dynamics, which help to convey the emotional intensity of the text. Another of Davy's notable works is his Missa Rex seculorum, a mass setting that was likely composed in the late 1490s. This work is notable for its use of a cantus firmus, a pre-existing melody that is used as the basis for the composition. In the Missa Rex seculorum, Davy uses a popular secular song as the cantus firmus, which adds a layer of familiarity and accessibility to the work. Davy's music was highly regarded during his lifetime, and he was often called upon to compose music for important state occasions. For example, he composed a setting of the Te Deum for the coronation of Henry VII in 1485, and he also composed music for the funeral of Henry VII in 1509. Despite his success as a composer, Davy's life was not without its challenges. In the early 1500s, he was accused of embezzlement and was briefly imprisoned. However, he was eventually released and continued to compose music until his death in the early 1520s. Today, Richard Davy is remembered as one of the most important composers of the late medieval period.
