The ensemble was founded in 1961 by Dr. Kenneth Fulton, who was a professor of music at San Diego State University. Dr. Fulton had a vision of creating a choir that would bring together the best singers in the San Diego area to perform choral music at the highest level. The San Diego Master Chorale has had many talented members over the years, but some of the most notable include Dr. Arlie Langager, who served as the ensemble's music director for over 20 years, and Dr. John Russell, who took over as music director in 2015. The ensemble is made up of approximately 100 singers, all of whom are volunteers. The singers come from all walks of life, but they share a passion for choral music and a commitment to excellence. Over the years, the San Diego Master Chorale has performed a wide variety of choral music, including works by Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart, and many others. The ensemble has also commissioned new works from contemporary composers, including Morten Lauridsen, who is one of the most celebrated choral composers of our time. One of the highlights of the San Diego Master Chorale's history was its performance of Handel's Messiah in 1987. This performance was particularly special because it was held in the newly renovated Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park, which is one of the most beautiful outdoor concert venues in the world. The performance was a huge success, and it helped to establish the San Diego Master Chorale as one of the premier choral ensembles in the region. Another highlight of the San Diego Master Chorale's history was its performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in 2013. This performance was particularly challenging because it required the ensemble to sing in German, which is not a language that many of the singers were familiar with. However, under the direction of Dr. Langager, the ensemble rose to the challenge and delivered a stunning performance that left the audience in awe. The San Diego Master Chorale has also been recognized for its excellence by a number of prestigious organizations. In 2010, the ensemble was awarded the Chorus America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, which is given to choirs that demonstrate a commitment to performing new and innovative works. The San Diego Master Chorale has also been invited to perform at a number of prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall in New York City and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. In addition to its regular performances, the San Diego Master Chorale is also committed to community outreach. The ensemble regularly performs at local schools and retirement homes, and it also hosts a number of educational programs for young singers. These programs are designed to inspire the next generation of choral singers and to promote a love of music in the community. In conclusion, the San Diego Master Chorale is a classical music ensemble that has been entertaining audiences with its beautiful music for over 50 years. The ensemble was founded by Dr. Kenneth Fulton, and it is made up of approximately 100 volunteer singers who are committed to excellence. Over the years, the San Diego Master Chorale has performed a wide variety of choral music, and it has been recognized for its excellence by a number of prestigious organizations.More....
