Born on January 1, 1950, in Tokyo, Japan, Ushioda showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Her parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Ushioda's musical education began at the Toho Gakuen School of Music in Tokyo, where she studied under the guidance of renowned pianist and teacher, Toshiko Tamura. She later continued her studies at the Juilliard School in New York City, where she received a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance. Ushioda's talent and dedication to music were evident from an early age, and she quickly gained recognition as a rising star in the classical music world. She won numerous awards and competitions, including the prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1970, where she was awarded the third prize.
