Born on August 22, 1970, in Houston, Texas, Buzbee grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a professional trumpet player, and his mother was a pianist. Buzbee started playing the tuba at the age of 12 and quickly developed a passion for the instrument. Buzbee attended the University of Houston, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Tuba Performance. He then went on to pursue a Master of Music degree at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. During his time at the conservatory, Buzbee studied under the tutelage of Chester Schmitz, a renowned tuba player and teacher. After completing his studies, Buzbee began his professional career as a tuba player. He joined the Houston Symphony Orchestra in 1994 and played with the orchestra for six years. During his time with the Houston Symphony, Buzbee also performed with other orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. In 2000, Buzbee joined the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), a group dedicated to performing contemporary classical music. With ICE, Buzbee has performed in numerous concerts and festivals around the world, including the Lincoln Center Festival, the Ojai Music Festival, and the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. Buzbee has also been a member of the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra (ROCO) since 2005. With ROCO, Buzbee has performed in numerous concerts and has been featured as a soloist in several performances. Throughout his career, Buzbee has received numerous awards and accolades for his performances. In 1991, he won first prize in the Tuba/Euphonium Division of the National Solo Competition sponsored by the Music Teachers National Association. In 2002, Buzbee was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which recognizes outstanding instrumentalists who have demonstrated exceptional talent and potential for a significant career in music. The grant provided Buzbee with financial support to further his career and pursue his artistic goals. Buzbee has also been recognized for his contributions to the field of music education. He has served as a faculty member at several institutions, including the University of Houston, the New England Conservatory of Music, and the Manhattan School of Music.
