The Prometheus Ensemble is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1998 by a group of talented musicians who shared a passion for chamber music. The ensemble is based in Belgium and is known for its innovative and dynamic performances of classical music. The founding members of the Prometheus Ensemble were flutist Peter Verhoyen, clarinetist Roeland Hendrikx, violinist Kaja Nowak, violist Tony Nys, cellist Marie Hallynck, and pianist Jan Michiels. These musicians had all established themselves as soloists and chamber musicians in their own right, but they came together to form the Prometheus Ensemble with the goal of exploring the rich repertoire of chamber music and bringing it to audiences around the world. Over the years, the ensemble has expanded to include other talented musicians, but the core members have remained the same. Peter Verhoyen is still the ensemble's flutist, Roeland Hendrikx is still the clarinetist, Kaja Nowak is still the violinist, Tony Nys is still the violist, Marie Hallynck is still the cellist, and Jan Michiels is still the pianist. The Prometheus Ensemble has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals, including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Wigmore Hall in London, and the Festival de Wallonie in Belgium. The ensemble has also collaborated with some of the world's most renowned musicians, including cellist Mischa Maisky, pianist Maria João Pires, and violinist Vadim Repin. One of the highlights of the Prometheus Ensemble's career was their performance at the 2002 Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels. The ensemble was invited to perform as part of the competition's chamber music round, and their performance was widely praised for its technical precision and musicality. The ensemble was awarded the prestigious Prix Musica Viva for their performance, which is given to the best chamber music ensemble in the competition. Another notable performance by the Prometheus Ensemble was their 2006 concert at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. The ensemble performed a program of works by Mozart, Brahms, and Schumann, and their performance was hailed by critics as "exquisite" and "inspired." The ensemble received a standing ovation from the audience, and the concert was broadcast on Dutch national television. In addition to their performances, the Prometheus Ensemble has also recorded several albums of chamber music. Their recordings have been praised for their technical excellence and musical sensitivity, and they have received numerous awards and accolades. One of their most acclaimed recordings is their 2009 album of works by Mozart, which was named "Recording of the Month" by Gramophone magazine. The Prometheus Ensemble is known for their innovative programming, which often includes lesser-known works by composers such as Dvořák, Janáček, and Shostakovich. The ensemble is also committed to promoting the work of contemporary composers, and they have premiered several new works by Belgian composers. In addition to their performances and recordings, the Prometheus Ensemble is also involved in educational outreach programs. The ensemble regularly gives masterclasses and workshops for young musicians, and they have established a chamber music academy in Belgium to train the next generation of chamber musicians. Overall, the Prometheus Ensemble is a world-renowned classical music ensemble that has made a significant contribution to the world of chamber music.
