The Schwedischer Rundfunkchor, also known as the Swedish Radio Choir, is a world-renowned classical music ensemble based in Stockholm, Sweden. The choir was founded in 1925 as part of the Swedish Radio Corporation, and has since become one of the most respected and acclaimed choral groups in the world. The early years of the Schwedischer Rundfunkchor were marked by a commitment to excellence and a dedication to the art of choral music. Under the leadership of its first conductor, Hugo Alfvén, the choir quickly gained a reputation for its precision, clarity, and expressive power. Alfvén was succeeded by other notable conductors, including Eric Ericson, who led the choir from 1952 to 1982 and is widely regarded as one of the greatest choral conductors of the 20th century. Throughout its history, the Schwedischer Rundfunkchor has performed a wide range of choral music, from Renaissance polyphony to contemporary works. The choir has collaborated with many of the world's leading composers and conductors, including Igor Stravinsky, Leonard Bernstein, and Pierre Boulez. The choir has also performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. One of the highlights of the Schwedischer Rundfunkchor's career was its performance of Bach's Mass in B Minor at the 1968 Edinburgh Festival. The performance was widely acclaimed and helped to establish the choir's reputation as one of the finest choral ensembles in the world. The choir has also performed at many other major festivals and venues, including the Salzburg Festival, the BBC Proms, and Carnegie Hall. Over the years, the Schwedischer Rundfunkchor has received many awards and honors for its outstanding performances and recordings. In 1995, the choir was awarded the Swedish Royal Academy of Music's prestigious Litteris et Artibus medal for its contributions to Swedish music. The choir has also won numerous international awards, including the Grand Prix du Disque and the Diapason d'Or. Today, the Schwedischer Rundfunkchor continues to be one of the world's leading choral ensembles. Under the leadership of its current conductor, Peter Dijkstra, the choir continues to explore new repertoire and push the boundaries of choral music. The choir's recordings and performances continue to be celebrated for their beauty, precision, and emotional power, and the Schwedischer Rundfunkchor remains a beloved and respected institution in the world of classical music.
