Armen Babakhanian is a renowned classical pianist who has captivated audiences around the world with his virtuosic performances and deep musicality. Born on August 19, 1951, in Yerevan, Armenia, Babakhanian showed an early aptitude for music and began studying piano at the age of six. He quickly demonstrated a natural talent for the instrument and was soon recognized as a prodigy. Babakhanian's early musical education was shaped by the rich cultural heritage of Armenia, which has a long and storied tradition of classical music. He studied at the Tchaikovsky School of Music in Yerevan, where he was mentored by some of the country's most esteemed musicians. In addition to his victory at the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud competition, he has won first prize at the Montreal International Piano Competition, the Viotti International Piano Competition, and the Busoni International Piano Competition. He has also been awarded the title of Honored Artist of the Republic of Armenia, the highest artistic honor bestowed by the Armenian government. Babakhanian's repertoire is vast and varied, encompassing works from the Baroque era to the present day. He is particularly renowned for his interpretations of the music of Chopin and Rachmaninoff, whose works he has recorded extensively. His recordings have been released on major labels such as Deutsche Grammophon, EMI, and RCA, and have received critical acclaim for their technical precision and emotional depth. In addition to his work as a performer, Babakhanian is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. He has taught at the Tchaikovsky School of Music in Yerevan, the Moscow Conservatory, and the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, among other institutions.
