Trio Cracovia is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2003 in Krakow, Poland. The ensemble consists of three main members: Joanna Kreft (violin), Marta Kowalczyk (cello), and Marek Szlezer (piano). The trio has gained international recognition for their exceptional performances and has won numerous awards for their contributions to the classical music world. The founding of Trio Cracovia was a result of the three musicians' shared passion for chamber music. Joanna Kreft, Marta Kowalczyk, and Marek Szlezer had all studied at the Academy of Music in Krakow and had performed together in various chamber music groups. However, they decided to form their own ensemble in 2003, with the goal of exploring the rich repertoire of piano trios and bringing their unique interpretation to audiences around the world. Since its founding, Trio Cracovia has performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. The ensemble has been invited to perform at some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world, including the Carnegie Hall in New York, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Royal Albert Hall in London. They have also been featured in numerous music festivals, such as the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the Hong Kong Arts Festival. One of the highlights of Trio Cracovia's career was their performance at the 2006 International Chamber Music Competition in Osaka, Japan. The trio won first prize in the piano trio category, as well as the special prize for the best interpretation of a contemporary work. This was a significant achievement for the ensemble, as the competition was highly competitive and featured some of the world's most talented chamber music groups. In addition to their success at the International Chamber Music Competition, Trio Cracovia has also won several other awards and accolades throughout their career. They were awarded the prestigious Paszport Polityki award in 2008, which is given to individuals or groups who have made significant contributions to Polish culture. The trio was also awarded the Medal for Merit to Culture - Gloria Artis by the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage in 2013. Trio Cracovia is known for their exceptional musicianship and their ability to bring a fresh perspective to classical music. They are particularly renowned for their interpretations of works by Polish composers, such as Karol Szymanowski and Witold Lutosławski. The trio has also commissioned and premiered several new works by contemporary composers, including Paweł Szymański and Krzysztof Baculewski. One of the most notable performances by Trio Cracovia was their 2011 concert at the Carnegie Hall in New York. The trio performed a program of works by Polish composers, including Szymanowski's "Myths" and Lutosławski's "Preludes and Fugue for 13 Solo Strings." The performance was highly acclaimed by critics and audiences alike, with The New York Times describing the trio's playing as "exquisite" and "passionate." Trio Cracovia has also collaborated with several other renowned musicians and ensembles throughout their career. They have performed with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, the Sinfonia Varsovia, and the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra, among others. They have also collaborated with soloists such as violinist Janusz Wawrowski and cellist Andrzej Bauer. In addition to their performances, Trio Cracovia is also committed to music education and outreach.
