James Genus is a renowned bassist in the world of jazz and classical music. Born on January 20, 1966, in Hampton, Virginia, Genus grew up in a musical family. His father was a drummer, and his mother was a pianist. Genus started playing the bass guitar at the age of 12 and later switched to the upright bass. Genus attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he studied with jazz bassist Charlie Haden. After graduating in 1986, he moved to New York City to pursue a career in music. He quickly established himself as a versatile and in-demand bassist, playing with a wide range of artists in various genres. In the early 1990s, Genus joined the band of jazz pianist Michel Camilo. He played on Camilo's Grammy-winning album "Live at the Blue Note" and toured extensively with the group. Genus also played with other jazz luminaries such as Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and Wayne Shorter. In addition to his work in jazz, Genus has also made a name for himself in the classical music world. He has performed with the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. He has also collaborated with classical musicians such as violinist Joshua Bell and pianist Lang Lang. One of Genus's most notable performances was at the 2009 Kennedy Center Honors, where he played with jazz pianist and honoree Dave Brubeck. Genus's bass solo during Brubeck's classic tune "Take Five" was a highlight of the evening and received a standing ovation from the audience. Genus has also received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 2000, he won a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo for his work on Michael Brecker's album "Tales from the Hudson." He has also been named Best Bassist in the annual DownBeat Critics Poll multiple times. Despite his success, Genus remains humble and dedicated to his craft.
