James Genus is a renowned bassist in the world of jazz and classical music. Born on January 20, 1966, in Hampton, Virginia, Genus grew up in a musical family. His father was a drummer, and his mother was a pianist. Genus started playing the bass guitar at the age of 12 and later switched to the upright bass. Genus attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he studied with jazz bassist Charlie Haden. After graduating in 1986, he moved to New York City to pursue a career in music. He quickly established himself as a versatile and in-demand bassist, playing with a wide range of artists in various genres. In the early 1990s, Genus joined the band of jazz pianist Michel Camilo. He played on Camilo's Grammy-winning album "Live at the Blue Note" and toured extensively with the group.
