He was born on November 24, 1919, in London, England, to Jewish parents. His father, Abraham Kossoff, was a tailor, and his mother, Leah, was a seamstress. David was the youngest of four children, and his family lived in the East End of London. David Kossoff showed an early interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of six. He attended the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied under the renowned violinist Albert Sammons. He also studied composition with Ralph Vaughan Williams and conducting with Sir Adrian Boult. In 1940, David Kossoff joined the British Army and served in the Middle East during World War II. He continued to play the violin during his military service and entertained his fellow soldiers with his music. After the war, he returned to London and resumed his music studies at the Royal Academy of Music. David Kossoff began his career as a classical music artist in the 1940s and 1950s. He performed as a soloist with many of the leading orchestras in Britain, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He also performed in chamber music ensembles and was a member of the London String Quartet. He presented many radio and television programs on classical music, including the BBC's "Music While You Work" and "Music for All."
