Artist Info
Seldom Sene is a classical music ensemble that specializes in the performance of early music on recorders. The ensemble was founded in 2009 by five young musicians who shared a passion for the recorder and a desire to explore the rich repertoire of early music written for the instrument. The founding members of Seldom Sene were Eva Harmuthová, Ruth Dyson, Hester Groenleer, Stephanie Brandt, and Yukie Yamaguchi. All five musicians had studied at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, where they had met and formed a close bond over their shared love of the recorder and early music. From the beginning, Seldom Sene set out to explore the full range of the recorder repertoire, from the medieval period to the Baroque and beyond. The ensemble's name, which means "rarely seen" in English, reflects their commitment to uncovering lesser-known works and bringing them to life for modern audiences. Over the years, Seldom Sene has become known for their virtuosic performances and innovative programming. The ensemble has collaborated with a wide range of musicians and artists, including singers, dancers, and visual artists, to create unique and engaging performances that showcase the versatility and beauty of the recorder. One of the highlights of Seldom Sene's career was their performance at the prestigious Utrecht Early Music Festival in 2012. The ensemble's program, which featured works by 17th-century Dutch composers, was praised by critics and audiences alike for its technical precision and emotional depth. In 2014, Seldom Sene released their debut album, "Birds of Paradise," which featured music by 16th-century composer Jacob van Eyck. The album was a critical and commercial success, earning rave reviews and winning the prestigious Diapason d'Or award. Since then, Seldom Sene has continued to tour and record extensively, earning a reputation as one of the world's leading ensembles for early music on recorders. The ensemble's members have also become sought-after teachers and educators, sharing their knowledge and passion for the recorder with students around the world. Today, Seldom Sene is made up of four core members: Eva Harmuthová, Hester Groenleer, Stephanie Brandt, and Ruth Dyson. The ensemble continues to push the boundaries of what is possible on the recorder, exploring new repertoire and collaborating with other artists to create unforgettable performances that inspire and delight audiences around the world.More....
