The Malmö Symphony Chorus is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Malmö, Sweden. The choir was founded in 1935 and has since become one of the most respected choral groups in Scandinavia. The Malmö Symphony Chorus has a rich history of performing a wide range of choral works, from traditional classical pieces to contemporary compositions. The Malmö Symphony Chorus was founded by a group of music enthusiasts who wanted to create a high-quality choral ensemble in Malmö. The choir's first conductor was the Swedish composer and conductor Tor Mann, who led the group for over 20 years. Under Mann's leadership, the choir quickly gained a reputation for excellence, and its membership grew to over 100 singers. Over the years, the Malmö Symphony Chorus has performed with some of the world's most renowned conductors and orchestras. The choir has collaborated with conductors such as Herbert Blomstedt, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and Daniel Harding, and has performed with orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. One of the highlights of the Malmö Symphony Chorus's history was its performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the Berlin Philharmonic under the baton of Herbert von Karajan in 1977. The performance was widely acclaimed and cemented the choir's reputation as one of the finest choral ensembles in Europe. In addition to its collaborations with orchestras, the Malmö Symphony Chorus has also performed numerous concerts on its own. The choir has a wide repertoire that includes works by Bach, Mozart, Brahms, and many other composers. The choir has also premiered works by contemporary composers such as Arvo Pärt and Sofia Gubaidulina. The Malmö Symphony Chorus has received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1995, the choir was awarded the Swedish Royal Academy of Music's prestigious Interpretation Prize for its performance of Brahms's Ein deutsches Requiem. The choir has also been awarded the Swedish Radio Choir Prize and the Malmö City Culture Prize. The Malmö Symphony Chorus has undergone several changes in leadership over the years. In 2011, the choir appointed its current conductor, Dan-Olof Stenlund. Stenlund is a highly respected choral conductor who has worked with numerous choirs and orchestras throughout Europe. Under Stenlund's leadership, the Malmö Symphony Chorus has continued to perform at the highest level and has expanded its repertoire to include more contemporary works. Today, the Malmö Symphony Chorus is a vital part of the Swedish classical music scene. The choir continues to perform regularly with the Malmö Symphony Orchestra and other orchestras throughout Europe.
