English Voices is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2005 by conductor and pianist Ben Nicholas. The ensemble is made up of some of the finest singers and instrumentalists in the UK, and has gained a reputation for its innovative programming and high-quality performances. Ben Nicholas, who is also the artistic director of English Voices, has a wealth of experience in the classical music world. He has conducted numerous orchestras and choirs, and has worked with some of the most renowned musicians in the industry. Nicholas founded English Voices with the aim of creating a group that would be dedicated to performing a wide range of classical music, from early music to contemporary works. The ensemble's main members are a group of highly skilled singers and instrumentalists, many of whom have performed with some of the world's leading orchestras and choirs. The singers include sopranos Sarah Fox and Grace Davidson, mezzo-soprano Clare Wilkinson, tenors James Gilchrist and Nicholas Mulroy, and bass-baritone Matthew Brook. The instrumentalists include violinist Kati Debretzeni, cellist Richard Tunnicliffe, and harpsichordist Steven Devine. English Voices has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the UK and abroad, including the Royal Albert Hall, the Barbican Centre, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. The ensemble has also collaborated with some of the world's leading conductors, including Sir John Eliot Gardiner and Sir Simon Rattle. One of the highlights of English Voices' career was its performance of Bach's St Matthew Passion at the BBC Proms in 2011. The performance was widely praised by critics, with The Guardian describing it as "a performance of rare beauty and intensity". The ensemble has also received critical acclaim for its recordings, including its recording of Handel's Messiah, which was awarded the Gramophone Award for Best Baroque Vocal Recording in 2014. English Voices has also been involved in a number of educational projects, including workshops and masterclasses for young musicians. The ensemble is committed to promoting classical music to a wider audience, and has worked with a number of charities and community groups to bring music to people who might not otherwise have access to it.
