It was founded in 1945 by the Polish Radio as the first symphony orchestra in post-war Poland. The orchestra has since become one of the most renowned orchestras in Europe, known for its exceptional performances of both classical and contemporary music. The WRSO has had many notable conductors throughout its history, including Witold Rowicki, Bohdan Wodiczko, and Antoni Wit. Rowicki was the orchestra's first conductor and led the ensemble from 1945 to 1953. He was succeeded by Wodiczko, who served as the orchestra's conductor from 1953 to 1977. Under Wodiczko's leadership, the WRSO became known for its interpretations of the works of Polish composers, such as Chopin, Szymanowski, and Lutosławski. In 1977, Antoni Wit became the WRSO's conductor and led the orchestra for over 20 years. Wit is widely regarded as one of the greatest conductors of his generation and has received numerous awards for his work with the WRSO. During his tenure, the orchestra performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Berlin Philharmonic. One of the WRSO's most notable performances under Wit's leadership was their 1994 performance of Krzysztof Penderecki's Symphony No. 7, "Seven Gates of Jerusalem." The piece was commissioned by the city of Jerusalem to commemorate the 3,000th anniversary of the city's founding and was premiered by the WRSO in Jerusalem's Old City. The performance was a huge success and was later released on CD, earning the orchestra a Grammy Award for Best Choral Performance. The WRSO has also collaborated with many renowned soloists, including pianist Martha Argerich, violinist Itzhak Perlman, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. In 1999, the orchestra performed with Ma at the Vatican for Pope John Paul II's 79th birthday celebration. In addition to their performances, the WRSO has also recorded extensively. They have recorded over 200 albums, including works by Polish composers such as Chopin, Szymanowski, and Lutosławski, as well as works by Beethoven, Mozart, and Tchaikovsky. The WRSO has received numerous awards and accolades throughout its history. In addition to their Grammy Award, the orchestra has also received the Grand Prix du Disque, the Diapason d'Or, and the Cannes Classical Award. They have also been awarded the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland and the Gloria Artis Gold Medal for Cultural Merit. Today, the WRSO continues to be one of the most respected and renowned orchestras in Europe. They perform regularly at the National Philharmonic in Warsaw and have toured extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the Americas. The orchestra's commitment to excellence and their dedication to promoting Polish music has made them a beloved institution in the world of classical music.More....
