He was heavily influenced by punk rock and new wave music, and began playing in bands while still in high school. After graduating, Moby moved to New York City to pursue a career in music. He played in several bands throughout the 1980s, including the punk rock group The Vatican Commandos and the post-punk band AWOL. In 1990, Moby released his first solo album, "Moby," which was a mix of electronic dance music and ambient music.
