Period:ModernGenre:ConcertoFolke Nauta was a Dutch classical pianist and composer, born on September 22, 1949, in Leeuwarden, Netherlands. He was the youngest of three children born to a family of musicians. His father was a conductor and his mother was a pianist. Nauta showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Nauta's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with his mother and later studied with renowned pianists such as György Sebők and Maria João Pires. He also studied composition with Ton de Leeuw and Louis Andriessen. Nauta made his debut as a pianist at the age of 16, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Frysk Orkest. He went on to perform with many other orchestras, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Nauta was known for his interpretations of the works of Bach, Beethoven, and Schubert. He was also a champion of contemporary music and premiered works by composers such as Louis Andriessen, György Ligeti, and John Cage. In addition to his career as a pianist, Nauta was also a composer. He wrote works for solo piano, chamber ensembles, and orchestra. His compositions were influenced by his interest in jazz and improvisation. Nauta received many awards and honors throughout his career. In 1972, he won the first prize at the Gaudeamus International Interpreters Competition in Rotterdam. He was also awarded the Dutch Music Prize in 1985, the highest honor for a musician in the Netherlands. One of Nauta's most memorable performances was his 1987 performance of Bach's Goldberg Variations at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. The performance was recorded and released on CD, becoming one of Nauta's most popular recordings. Nauta continued to perform and compose until his death on December 29, 2004, at the age of 55. He was remembered as a passionate and innovative musician who pushed the boundaries of classical music.More....
