Janet Price was a renowned Welsh soprano who was born on June 17, 1943, in Neath, South Wales. She was the daughter of a coal miner and grew up in a working-class family. Her love for music was evident from a young age, and she began singing in her local church choir at the age of six. Janet's talent was recognized early on, and she was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff. She continued her studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she was a student of the famous soprano, Joan Sutherland. Janet made her professional debut in 1968, singing the role of the First Lady in Mozart's "The Magic Flute" at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera. Her performance was widely praised, and she quickly established herself as one of the leading sopranos of her generation. Over the course of her career, Janet performed in many of the world's most prestigious opera houses, including the Royal Opera House in London, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and La Scala in Milan. She was particularly renowned for her interpretations of the works of Mozart, Handel, and Britten. One of Janet's most memorable performances was her portrayal of the title role in Handel's "Semele" at the Royal Opera House in 1975. Her performance was widely acclaimed, and she was awarded the Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera for her portrayal of the character. Janet also had a successful recording career, with many of her recordings receiving critical acclaim. She recorded several albums of Mozart's operas, including "The Marriage of Figaro" and "Don Giovanni," as well as Handel's "Messiah" and Britten's "War Requiem." In addition to her opera performances, Janet was also a sought-after concert performer. She performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Berlin Philharmonic. Throughout her career, Janet received many awards and honors for her contributions to classical music. In 1982, she was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) for her services to music. She was also awarded the Queen's Medal for Music in 2005, which is awarded to individuals who have made a significant contribution to the musical life of the nation. Janet retired from performing in 1999, but she continued to be involved in the music world as a teacher and mentor to young singers. She was a professor of singing at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and also taught at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Janet Price passed away on December 27, 2015, at the age of 72. She was remembered as one of the greatest sopranos of her generation, with a voice that was both powerful and expressive. Her contributions to the world of classical music will be remembered for generations to come.
