He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. From a young age, Wallén showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later went on to study at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where he honed his skills as a pianist. Wallén's talent as a pianist was evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition for his exceptional skills. He won his first major competition at the age of 16, when he was awarded first prize in the Finnish National Piano Competition. This was followed by several other awards and accolades, including the first prize in the Nordic Piano Competition in 1976. In 1978, Wallén made his debut as a soloist with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3. This performance was widely acclaimed, and Wallén was praised for his technical skill and musicality. This marked the beginning of a successful career as a concert pianist, and Wallén went on to perform with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. Throughout his career, Wallén was known for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Mozart, and Schubert. He was particularly admired for his ability to bring out the emotional depth and complexity of these composers' works, and his performances were often described as deeply moving and profound. In addition to his work as a soloist, Wallén was also a dedicated chamber musician. He was a founding member of the Helsinki Trio, which was widely regarded as one of the finest chamber ensembles of its time. The trio performed together for over a decade, and their recordings of works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Schubert are still considered to be among the best in the genre. Wallén's career was marked by many highlights and achievements. In 1983, he was awarded the Pro Finlandia Medal, which is one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a Finnish citizen. He was also a recipient of the Sibelius Medal, which is awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to Finnish music. One of Wallén's most memorable performances took place in 1991, when he performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 with the Berlin Philharmonic under the baton of Claudio Abbado. This performance was recorded and released on CD, and it is still considered to be one of the definitive recordings of this work. Wallén continued to perform and record throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, but his career was cut short by illness. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2005 and passed away on December 31, 2006, at the age of 51. Despite his relatively short career, Martti Wallén left a lasting legacy in the world of classical music. He was widely regarded as one of the finest pianists of his generation, and his recordings and performances continue to inspire and move audiences around the world.More....
