Genre:ChamberEinar Henning Smebye is a renowned Norwegian classical pianist, known for his virtuosic performances and deep understanding of the music he plays. Born on August 22, 1969, in Oslo, Norway, Smebye showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He was a prodigious talent, and by the time he was a teenager, he had already won several national and international competitions. Smebye's musical education began at the Barratt Due Institute of Music in Oslo, where he studied with the renowned pianist Einar Steen-Nøkleberg. He later went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in piano performance. During his time at Juilliard, Smebye studied with some of the most distinguished pianists of the time, including Jerome Lowenthal, György Sándor, and Adele Marcus. Smebye's career as a concert pianist began in earnest in the early 1990s, when he won several major competitions, including the International Edvard Grieg Piano Competition in Bergen, Norway, and the International Piano Competition in Senigallia, Italy. These victories helped to establish Smebye as one of the most promising young pianists of his generation, and he soon began to receive invitations to perform with some of the world's leading orchestras. One of Smebye's most notable performances came in 1994, when he made his debut with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, playing Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. The performance was a resounding success, and Smebye was praised for his technical brilliance and emotional depth. He went on to perform with many other leading orchestras, including the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London. Smebye's repertoire is wide-ranging, and he is equally at home playing the works of the classical masters as he is with contemporary music. He has a particular affinity for the music of Edvard Grieg, and has recorded several albums of Grieg's piano music, including the complete Lyric Pieces. He has also recorded works by other Norwegian composers, such as Christian Sinding and Harald Sæverud. In addition to his work as a concert pianist, Smebye is also a respected teacher and lecturer. He has taught at several institutions, including the Norwegian Academy of Music and the Barratt Due Institute of Music, and has given masterclasses and lectures at universities and conservatories around the world. He is known for his insightful and engaging approach to teaching, and has inspired many young pianists to pursue careers in music. Smebye has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Grieg Prize, the Norwegian Music Critics' Award, and the Order of Merit from the King of Norway. He is also a member of the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters, and has been awarded honorary doctorates from several universities. Despite his many achievements, Smebye remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to perform regularly, both as a soloist and as a chamber musician, and is always seeking new challenges and opportunities to grow as an artist. His passion for music is infectious, and he has inspired countless people around the world to appreciate and love classical music.More....
