The Zorá Quartet is a classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their unique sound and dynamic performances since their founding in 2015. The quartet is made up of four talented musicians: violinists Dechopol Kowintaweewat and Seula Lee, violist Pablo Muñoz Salido, and cellist Zizai Ning. The quartet was founded at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where the members were all studying at the time. They quickly bonded over their shared passion for chamber music and decided to form a quartet together. The name "Zorá" was chosen as a nod to the Greek word for "dawn," symbolizing the quartet's hope to bring a new and fresh perspective to classical music. Since their founding, the Zorá Quartet has been praised for their technical precision, musicality, and ability to connect with audiences. They have performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Berlin Philharmonie. They have also been featured on numerous radio programs, including NPR's "Performance Today" and WQXR's "Young Artists Showcase." One of the highlights of the Zorá Quartet's career was their win at the 2015 Young Concert Artists International Auditions. This prestigious competition has launched the careers of many of today's top classical musicians, and the Zorá Quartet was thrilled to be among the winners. As part of their prize, they were given the opportunity to perform at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and to embark on a tour of the United States. In addition to their success at the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, the Zorá Quartet has also won numerous other awards and honors. They were the recipients of the 2018 Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, which recognizes ensembles that are pushing the boundaries of classical music through innovative programming. They were also named the 2019-2021 Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence at the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts in New York. The Zorá Quartet's repertoire is diverse and eclectic, ranging from classical masterpieces to contemporary works. They are particularly passionate about performing works by underrepresented composers, including women and people of color. They have commissioned and premiered works by several living composers, including Gabriella Smith and Michael Gilbertson. One of the Zorá Quartet's most memorable performances was their 2019 debut at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall. The program featured works by Haydn, Beethoven, and Gabriella Smith, and was praised by critics for its "impressive technical skill" and "deep musicality." The quartet was also praised for their ability to connect with the audience and make the music come alive. Another highlight of the Zorá Quartet's career was their 2020 performance at the Berlin Philharmonie. This iconic venue is one of the most prestigious in the world, and the quartet was thrilled to have the opportunity to perform there. The program featured works by Mozart, Bartók, and Gabriella Smith, and was met with enthusiastic applause from the audience. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Zorá Quartet has continued to perform and connect with audiences through virtual concerts and recordings. They released their debut album, "Azuline," in 2020, which features works by Gabriella Smith, Caroline Shaw, and Felix Mendelssohn.
