The Bern State Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based in the city of Bern, Switzerland. The orchestra was founded in 1930 by conductor Paul Kletzki, who served as its first music director. Since then, the orchestra has become one of the most prominent and respected ensembles in Switzerland and Europe. The Bern State Orchestra is made up of approximately 70 musicians, including string, woodwind, brass, and percussion players. The orchestra's members are highly skilled and experienced musicians, many of whom have studied at some of the world's most prestigious music schools and conservatories. Over the years, the Bern State Orchestra has performed a wide range of classical music repertoire, including works by composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky. The orchestra has also premiered many new works by contemporary composers, and has collaborated with some of the world's most renowned soloists and conductors. One of the highlights of the Bern State Orchestra's history was its performance at the 1956 Lucerne Festival, where it played under the baton of conductor Herbert von Karajan. The orchestra's performance was widely praised, and helped to establish its reputation as one of the leading orchestras in Europe. In addition to its performances in Switzerland, the Bern State Orchestra has also toured extensively throughout Europe and the world. In 2007, the orchestra won the Swiss Music Prize, which is awarded annually to the country's most outstanding musicians and ensembles. The orchestra has also received numerous awards for its recordings, including several Gramophone Awards and Diapason d'Or awards. Today, the Bern State Orchestra continues to be one of the most respected and admired classical music ensembles in Europe. Under the leadership of its current music director, Mario Venzago, the orchestra continues to perform a wide range of classical music repertoire, and to collaborate with some of the world's most renowned soloists and conductors.
