Dominante Choir is a Finnish classical music choir that has gained international recognition for its exceptional performances. The choir was founded in 1984 by Seppo Murto, who served as its conductor until 2014. Since then, the choir has been led by conductor Esa Heikkilä. The choir's name, Dominante, is derived from the Latin word "dominans," which means dominant or ruling. This name reflects the choir's commitment to excellence and its desire to be a leading force in the world of classical music. From its inception, Dominante Choir has been dedicated to performing a wide range of choral music, from early music to contemporary works. The choir has a particular focus on Finnish music, and has premiered many new works by Finnish composers. Over the years, Dominante Choir has performed in many prestigious venues around the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Berlin Philharmonic Hall. The choir has also collaborated with many renowned orchestras, including the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tapiola Sinfonietta, and the Lahti Symphony Orchestra. One of the highlights of Dominante Choir's career was its performance at the 2005 World Choral Symposium in Kyoto, Japan. The choir received widespread acclaim for its performance of Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara's "Vigilia," which was described as "spellbinding" and "transcendent." In addition to its many performances, Dominante Choir has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1997, the choir won the Grand Prix at the International Choral Competition in Tolosa, Spain. The following year, the choir won the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing in Tours, France. In 2004, the choir was awarded the prestigious Finnish State Prize for Music. Despite its many achievements, Dominante Choir remains committed to its mission of promoting choral music and fostering cultural exchange through music. The choir regularly participates in international choral festivals and workshops, and has hosted many visiting choirs from around the world. In recent years, Dominante Choir has continued to push the boundaries of choral music, exploring new sounds and styles while remaining true to its roots. The choir's most recent album, "Northern Lights," features a collection of contemporary Finnish choral music, including works by composers such as Jaakko Mäntyjärvi and Olli Kortekangas.
