Ioana Bentoiu is a Romanian classical music artist who has made a name for herself as a pianist, composer, and musicologist. Born on December 22, 1953, in Bucharest, Romania, Bentoiu grew up in a family of musicians. Her father, Pascal Bentoiu, was a renowned composer and musicologist, and her mother, Maria Bentoiu, was a pianist and music teacher. From a young age, Bentoiu showed a keen interest in music and began taking piano lessons at the age of six. Bentoiu's musical talent was evident from an early age, and she quickly became a prodigy. She won her first piano competition at the age of nine and went on to win numerous other competitions throughout her childhood and teenage years. In 1971, she graduated from the George Enescu Music High School in Bucharest, where she studied piano with Florica Musicescu, one of Romania's most renowned piano teachers. After completing her high school education, Bentoiu went on to study piano at the National University of Music in Bucharest, where she earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in piano performance. During her time at the university, she studied with some of Romania's most distinguished piano teachers, including Florin Georgescu, Dan Grigore, and Valentin Gheorghiu. In addition to her piano studies, Bentoiu also developed a keen interest in composition and musicology. She began studying composition with her father, Pascal Bentoiu, and went on to earn a Doctorate in Musicology from the National University of Music in Bucharest. Her doctoral thesis, which focused on the music of the Romanian composer George Enescu, was widely acclaimed and helped establish her as a leading authority on Enescu's music. Throughout her career, Bentoiu has been recognized for her outstanding musical achievements. She has won numerous awards and honors, including the Romanian Academy's George Enescu Prize for Musicology, the Romanian Composers' Union Prize for Composition, and the Romanian Ministry of Culture's Cultural Merit Medal. She has also been invited to perform at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Salle Pleyel in Paris. Bentoiu's repertoire as a pianist is wide-ranging and includes works by some of the greatest composers in the classical music canon, including Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff. She is particularly renowned for her interpretations of the music of George Enescu, and has recorded several albums of his piano music. Her compositions have been performed by some of the world's leading orchestras and chamber ensembles, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Arditti Quartet.
