Jeffrey Weisner is a renowned classical music artist who has made a name for himself as a cellist and conductor. Born in 1963 in New York City, Weisner grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to classical music from a young age. His father was a violinist and his mother was a pianist, and they encouraged him to pursue music as a career. Weisner began playing the cello at the age of six and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied with some of the best cello teachers in the country, including Harvey Shapiro and Leonard Rose, and went on to attend the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. After graduating from Juilliard, Weisner began his career as a professional cellist, performing with some of the top orchestras in the country. He was a member of the New York Philharmonic for several years and also played with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In addition to his work as a cellist, Weisner also began conducting orchestras and chamber ensembles. He studied conducting with Leonard Bernstein and Seiji Ozawa and went on to conduct the National Symphony Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and the New York City Opera. One of the highlights of Weisner's career as a cellist was his performance of the Bach Cello Suites at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. in 1995. The performance was widely praised by critics and cemented Weisner's reputation as one of the top cellists of his generation. As a conductor, Weisner has received numerous awards and accolades for his work. He was the recipient of the Leonard Bernstein Conducting Fellowship in 1992 and was named the Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra's Youth Fellowship Program in 1995. Weisner has also been a champion of contemporary classical music and has premiered works by some of the most important composers of the 20th and 21st centuries. He has worked closely with composers such as John Adams, Philip Glass, and Steve Reich and has conducted premieres of their works with orchestras around the world. In addition to his work as a performer and conductor, Weisner is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught at the Juilliard School, the New England Conservatory of Music, and the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, among others.
