Armando Bayolo is a contemporary classical music composer who was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1960. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a jazz pianist and his mother a singer. Bayolo began playing the piano at a young age and later learned to play the trumpet and guitar. Bayolo attended the University of Miami, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in composition. He then went on to earn a Master of Music degree in composition from the University of Michigan. During his time at Michigan, Bayolo studied with composers William Bolcom and Leslie Bassett. After completing his studies, Bayolo moved to New York City, where he worked as a freelance composer and musician. He also taught music theory and composition at the City College of New York and the Mannes College of Music. Bayolo's music is known for its eclectic style, blending elements of classical, jazz, and rock music. He has composed works for a variety of ensembles, including orchestras, chamber groups, and solo performers. One of Bayolo's most notable works is his Symphony No. 1, which was commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica in 2005. The symphony is in four movements and features a wide range of musical styles, including Latin American rhythms, jazz harmonies, and classical forms. Another notable work by Bayolo is his chamber opera, La Reina, which was premiered in 2010. The opera tells the story of a young woman who becomes the queen of a fictional South American country. The music features a mix of classical and Latin American styles, and the opera has been praised for its powerful storytelling and emotional depth. In addition to his work as a composer, Bayolo is also a respected music educator. He has taught at several universities, including the University of Maryland and the Peabody Conservatory of Music. He has also served as a guest lecturer and conductor at numerous institutions around the world. Bayolo has received numerous awards and honors for his work as a composer, including grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the American Composers Forum. He has also been recognized for his contributions to the field of music education, receiving the Peabody Conservatory's Excellence in Teaching Award in 2012.
