The NTO Tonkünstlerorchester is a classical music ensemble based in Austria. It was founded in 1893 by a group of musicians who wanted to create a professional orchestra that would perform in the Lower Austria region. The ensemble has since grown to become one of the most respected orchestras in Europe, with a reputation for excellence in both classical and contemporary music. The NTO Tonkünstlerorchester is made up of approximately 90 musicians, including string players, woodwind players, brass players, and percussionists. The ensemble is led by a principal conductor, who is responsible for shaping the orchestra's sound and guiding its artistic direction. Over the years, the orchestra has worked with many renowned conductors, including Herbert von Karajan, Leonard Bernstein, and Claudio Abbado. One of the highlights of the NTO Tonkünstlerorchester's history was its performance at the 1955 Salzburg Festival, where it played under the baton of Herbert von Karajan. This performance helped to establish the orchestra's reputation as one of the finest in Europe, and it has since gone on to perform at many other prestigious venues and festivals around the world. In addition to its classical repertoire, the NTO Tonkünstlerorchester has also been a champion of contemporary music. It has commissioned and premiered works by many leading composers, including György Ligeti, Krzysztof Penderecki, and Wolfgang Rihm. The orchestra has also collaborated with many contemporary musicians, including jazz pianist Chick Corea and rock musician Sting. Over the years, the NTO Tonkünstlerorchester has won many awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. In 2014, it was named "Orchestra of the Year" by the Austrian music magazine "Klassik heute." The orchestra has also won several Echo Klassik awards, which are given annually to outstanding classical musicians and ensembles. Despite its long history and many achievements, the NTO Tonkünstlerorchester remains committed to its original mission of bringing high-quality classical music to audiences in Lower Austria and beyond. The ensemble continues to perform regularly at the Musikverein in Vienna, as well as at other venues throughout Austria and Europe.
