The Aulos Ensemble is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1973 by five musicians who shared a passion for early music. The founding members were Christopher Krueger (flute), Linda Quan (violin), Myron Lutzke (cello), Arthur Haas (harpsichord), and Marc Schachman (oboe). The ensemble was named after the ancient Greek wind instrument, the aulos, which was commonly used in classical music. The Aulos Ensemble quickly gained recognition for their performances of Baroque and early Classical music, and they became known for their historically informed approach to music-making. They were one of the first ensembles to use period instruments and to perform music in the style of the time in which it was written. This approach was a departure from the more romanticized interpretations of classical music that were popular at the time. The ensemble's main members have changed over the years, but the Aulos Ensemble has always maintained a core group of musicians who are dedicated to the ensemble's mission. Christopher Krueger, who was one of the founding members, has remained with the ensemble throughout its history. Other notable members have included flutist Marc Redfield, violinist Linda Quan, cellist Myron Lutzke, and harpsichordist Arthur Haas. The Aulos Ensemble has performed at many of the world's most prestigious concert halls and music festivals, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, and the Edinburgh Festival. They have also toured extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. One of the ensemble's most notable performances was their 1985 concert at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, which was broadcast live on National Public Radio. The concert featured music by Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi, and it was praised for its virtuosic performances and historically informed approach. The Aulos Ensemble has also been recognized for their recordings, which have received critical acclaim and numerous awards. Their recording of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque, and their recording of Handel's Water Music was nominated for a Grammy Award. In addition to their performances and recordings, the Aulos Ensemble has also been dedicated to education and outreach. They have conducted masterclasses and workshops for students and young musicians, and they have worked with schools and community organizations to promote classical music and early music. The Aulos Ensemble has been a pioneer in the field of early music, and they have inspired many other musicians and ensembles to explore the music of the past. Their dedication to historical accuracy and their virtuosic performances have made them one of the most respected and admired ensembles in the classical music world.
