UMZE Ensemble is a classical music ensemble based in Budapest, Hungary. The ensemble was founded in 1988 by a group of young musicians who were passionate about contemporary music and wanted to create a platform for the performance and promotion of new works. The founding members of UMZE Ensemble were László Sáry, Péter Eötvös, Zoltán Jeney, and László Vidovszky. These four musicians were all composers and performers who had studied at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. They were joined by a group of like-minded musicians who shared their passion for contemporary music and their desire to push the boundaries of classical music performance. From the beginning, UMZE Ensemble was committed to performing new works by contemporary composers from Hungary and around the world. The ensemble quickly gained a reputation for its innovative programming and its commitment to exploring new sounds and techniques. Over the years, UMZE Ensemble has grown and evolved, but its commitment to contemporary music has remained constant. Today, the ensemble is made up of some of Hungary's most talented musicians, including many who have won awards and recognition for their work. One of the highlights of UMZE Ensemble's career was its performance at the 1992 ISCM World Music Days in Warsaw, Poland. This prestigious festival brings together some of the world's most innovative and exciting contemporary music ensembles, and UMZE Ensemble was honored to be selected to perform. Another major highlight for UMZE Ensemble was its performance at the 2006 Budapest Autumn Festival. This festival is one of Hungary's most important cultural events, and UMZE Ensemble was invited to perform a program of contemporary works by Hungarian composers. The performance was a huge success, and the ensemble received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. In addition to its performances, UMZE Ensemble has also been recognized for its recordings. The ensemble has released several albums of contemporary music, including works by Hungarian composers such as György Ligeti, Péter Eötvös, and László Sáry. In 1996, the ensemble was awarded the Bartók-Pásztory Prize, which is one of Hungary's most prestigious cultural awards. In 2008, UMZE Ensemble was awarded the Hungarian Artisjus Prize for its contributions to contemporary music. This prize is awarded by the Hungarian Society of Authors, Composers, and Music Publishers to individuals and organizations who have made significant contributions to the development of Hungarian music. Today, UMZE Ensemble continues to be one of Hungary's most important and innovative contemporary music ensembles. The ensemble's commitment to new music and its willingness to push the boundaries of classical music performance have made it a favorite of audiences and critics alike.
