Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra (KSO) is a Norwegian classical music ensemble based in Kristiansand, the fifth-largest city in Norway. The orchestra was founded in 1919 as Kristiansand Byorkester (Kristiansand City Orchestra) and has since then been an important cultural institution in the region. The orchestra's founding members were a group of amateur musicians who wanted to create a platform for classical music in Kristiansand. The first conductor of the orchestra was the Norwegian composer and conductor Johan Halvorsen, who was also the founder of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. Under Halvorsen's leadership, the orchestra quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality performances and became a popular attraction in the region. Over the years, the orchestra has had several conductors, including the Norwegian composer and conductor Arild Sandvold, who led the orchestra from 1969 to 1984. During Sandvold's tenure, the orchestra expanded its repertoire and started to collaborate with international soloists and conductors. In 1984, Terje Boye Hansen was appointed as the new conductor of the orchestra. Hansen, who had previously worked with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, brought a new vision to the orchestra and focused on developing its sound and artistic profile. Under Hansen's leadership, the orchestra became known for its innovative programming and collaborations with contemporary composers and artists. One of the highlights of the orchestra's history was its performance at the opening ceremony of the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. The orchestra played a specially commissioned piece by the Norwegian composer Ketil Hvoslef, which was broadcast to millions of viewers around the world. In 2003, the orchestra changed its name to Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra to reflect its status as a professional ensemble. The orchestra has since then continued to develop its artistic profile and has collaborated with a wide range of international soloists and conductors. In recent years, the orchestra has been led by the Norwegian conductor and composer Peter Szilvay. Szilvay, who has previously worked with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Norwegian National Opera, has brought a new energy and artistic vision to the orchestra. Under Szilvay's leadership, the orchestra has continued to explore new repertoire and has collaborated with a range of contemporary composers and artists. The orchestra has received several awards and accolades over the years, including the Norwegian Grammy Award for Best Classical Album in 2007 for its recording of the music of the Norwegian composer Harald Saeverud. The orchestra has also been praised for its educational and outreach programs, which aim to bring classical music to a wider audience. Today, the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra is one of the leading classical music ensembles in Norway and continues to be an important cultural institution in the region. With its rich history and commitment to artistic excellence, the orchestra is sure to continue to inspire and delight audiences for many years to come.
