Matheus Pompeu is a Brazilian classical music artist who has made a name for himself as a talented pianist and conductor. Born on May 15, 1985, in São Paulo, Brazil, Pompeu showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He quickly demonstrated a natural talent for the instrument and began taking lessons with renowned Brazilian pianist, Maria José Carrasqueira. Pompeu's passion for music continued to grow throughout his childhood and teenage years. He attended the São Paulo State School of Music, where he studied piano, music theory, and composition. He also participated in numerous music competitions and festivals, winning several awards for his performances. In 2004, Pompeu was accepted into the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City, where he continued his studies in piano performance. During his time at Juilliard, he had the opportunity to work with some of the world's most renowned pianists, including Emanuel Ax, Yoheved Kaplinsky, and Jerome Lowenthal. After graduating from Juilliard in 2008, Pompeu began his career as a professional musician. He quickly gained recognition for his virtuosic piano playing and was invited to perform at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York City and the Royal Albert Hall in London. In addition to his work as a pianist, Pompeu also began conducting orchestras. He studied conducting with renowned conductor, Lorin Maazel, and made his conducting debut in 2010 with the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra. Since then, he has conducted numerous orchestras around the world, including the New York Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra. Pompeu's career has been marked by numerous highlights and achievements. In 2012, he was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which recognizes outstanding young musicians who show great potential for a major career in music. He was also named a Gilmore Young Artist in 2014, an honor given to exceptional pianists who are at the beginning of their careers. One of Pompeu's most memorable performances came in 2016, when he performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican Centre in London. The performance was widely praised by critics, who noted Pompeu's "dazzling technique" and "sensitive interpretation" of the piece. In addition to his work as a performer and conductor, Pompeu is also a dedicated music educator. He has taught masterclasses at numerous universities and conservatories around the world, including the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in China.
