The Aviv Quartet is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences around the world with their exceptional performances for over two decades. The quartet was founded in 1997 by four talented musicians who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to create a unique sound that would set them apart from other ensembles. The founding members of the Aviv Quartet were Sergey Ostrovsky (violin), Evgenia Epshtein (violin), Shuli Waterman (viola), and Rachel Mercer (cello). All four musicians had impressive backgrounds and had already established themselves as soloists and chamber musicians before coming together to form the quartet. The quartet's name, Aviv, is Hebrew for "spring," which reflects the group's desire to bring new life and energy to the world of chamber music. From the beginning, the Aviv Quartet set out to explore a wide range of repertoire, from the classical masters to contemporary composers, and to infuse their performances with a fresh and dynamic approach. One of the highlights of the Aviv Quartet's early career was their victory at the 1999 Banff International String Quartet Competition. This prestigious competition is known for launching the careers of many successful chamber ensembles, and the Aviv Quartet's win helped to establish them as one of the most promising young quartets of their generation. Since then, the Aviv Quartet has gone on to perform at many of the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals, including Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Salzburg Festival, and the Edinburgh Festival. They have collaborated with some of the most celebrated musicians of our time, including pianist Menahem Pressler, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and violinist Pinchas Zukerman. One of the hallmarks of the Aviv Quartet's performances is their ability to bring a fresh perspective to even the most familiar works in the chamber music repertoire. Their interpretations are marked by a deep understanding of the music, a keen sense of ensemble playing, and a willingness to take risks and explore new possibilities. In addition to their performances, the Aviv Quartet is also committed to education and outreach. They have worked with young musicians around the world, offering masterclasses and coaching sessions to help nurture the next generation of chamber musicians. Over the years, the Aviv Quartet has received numerous awards and accolades for their performances and recordings. In addition to their victory at the Banff competition, they have been awarded the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award, the Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, and the Echo Klassik Award for their recording of the complete Beethoven string quartets. Despite changes in personnel over the years, the Aviv Quartet has remained true to their original vision of bringing new life and energy to the world of chamber music. They continue to inspire audiences around the world with their exceptional performances and their commitment to excellence in all aspects of their work.
