Born in London, England in 1979, Bates grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to classical music from a young age. His father was a professional cellist, and his mother was a music teacher, so it was only natural that Bates would follow in their footsteps. He also performed as a soloist with many orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the Munich Chamber Orchestra. In addition to his work as an oboist, Bates has also established himself as a skilled conductor. He has conducted many orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the Munich Chamber Orchestra. He has also served as the principal conductor of the Royal Northern Sinfonia and the English Chamber Orchestra. Bates has received many awards and accolades throughout his career. In 2004, he was awarded the prestigious Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship, which recognizes outstanding young musicians. He was also a finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition in 1996. One of the highlights of Bates' career was his performance at the 2012 Last Night of the Proms, which is one of the most prestigious classical music events in the world. Bates performed as the soloist in Benjamin Britten's "The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra" with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jiří Bělohlávek. The performance was broadcast live on television and radio to millions of viewers around the world. Another notable performance by Bates was his 2015 performance of Richard Strauss' Oboe Concerto with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The performance was recorded and released on CD, receiving critical acclaim for Bates' virtuosic playing and sensitive interpretation of the piece. Bates is also a passionate advocate for contemporary classical music and has premiered many new works by leading composers. He has worked closely with composers such as Mark-Anthony Turnage, Thomas Adès, and George Benjamin, and has premiered works by these composers with many orchestras around the world. In addition to his performing and conducting career, Bates is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught at the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich, and has given masterclasses around the world.
