James Keating was born on May 12, 1985, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a renowned pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Keating showed a natural talent for music, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. Keating began his formal music education at the age of six, studying piano under the tutelage of his father. He quickly progressed and began performing in public at the age of eight. By the time he was ten, he had already won several local piano competitions. In 1997, Keating was accepted into the Juilliard School's Pre-College Division, where he continued his piano studies with renowned pianist Yoheved Kaplinsky. During his time at Juilliard, Keating won numerous awards and competitions, including the prestigious Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition. After graduating from Juilliard, Keating went on to study at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied with renowned pianist Gary Graffman. While at Curtis, Keating continued to win awards and competitions, including the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and the International Tchaikovsky Competition. Keating's career as a concert pianist began in earnest in 2007, when he made his debut with the New York Philharmonic. Since then, he has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Keating is known for his virtuosic performances of the works of Beethoven, Chopin, and Liszt, among others. He has recorded several albums, including a critically acclaimed recording of Beethoven's Piano Concertos with the London Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his performing career, Keating is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught masterclasses at many of the world's leading music schools, including the Juilliard School, the Curtis Institute of Music, and the Royal Academy of Music in London. Keating has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Avery Fisher Career Grant, the Gilmore Artist Award, and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. He is also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Despite his many accomplishments, Keating remains humble and dedicated to his craft.
