Melody of China is a classical music ensemble that specializes in traditional Chinese music. The ensemble was founded in 1993 by Yangqin Zhao, a renowned musician and composer who is considered one of the leading experts in Chinese music in the United States. The ensemble's main members include Yangqin Zhao on the yangqin (a Chinese hammered dulcimer), Gangqin Zhao on the guzheng (a Chinese zither), Wanpeng Guo on the dizi (a Chinese bamboo flute), and Zhengyang Wu on the erhu (a Chinese two-stringed fiddle). All of the members are highly skilled musicians who have studied traditional Chinese music extensively. Melody of China has performed at numerous venues and events throughout the United States and around the world. Some of the ensemble's most notable performances include a concert at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., a performance at the Lincoln Center in New York City, and a tour of China in 2006. In addition to their live performances, Melody of China has also released several albums of traditional Chinese music. Their debut album, "Melody of China," was released in 1996 and received critical acclaim for its beautiful arrangements and virtuosic performances. The ensemble has since released several more albums, including "Chinese Traditional Music," "Silk and Bamboo," and "Chinese Music for the Soul." Melody of China has received numerous awards and accolades for their contributions to traditional Chinese music. In 2002, the ensemble was awarded the San Francisco Mayor's Art Award for their outstanding contributions to the arts in the city. They have also been recognized by the Chinese American Cultural Association and the Chinese Music Society of North America.
