He was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a well-known composer and conductor. Bellugi began his musical training at a young age, and he showed exceptional talent in both piano and conducting. Bellugi studied at the Conservatorio Luigi Cherubini in Florence, where he received a degree in piano performance. He then went on to study conducting with Carlo Maria Giulini and Franco Ferrara. Bellugi's talent as a conductor was quickly recognized, and he was soon invited to conduct major orchestras throughout Europe. In 1956, Bellugi made his debut as a conductor at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, where he conducted a performance of Verdi's "La Traviata." This performance was a huge success, and it launched Bellugi's career as a conductor. He went on to conduct many other operas at the Teatro alla Scala, including "Don Giovanni," "The Marriage of Figaro," and "Carmen." Bellugi also conducted many orchestras throughout Europe, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic. He was known for his interpretations of the works of Mozart, Beethoven, and Verdi, and he was highly respected by his peers in the classical music world. In addition to his work as a conductor, Bellugi was also an accomplished pianist. He often performed as a soloist with orchestras, and he recorded many albums of piano music. His recordings of the works of Chopin, Liszt, and Debussy are particularly well-regarded. Throughout his career, Bellugi received many awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1971, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, and in 1984, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. He was also a member of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome and the Royal Academy of Music in London. Bellugi continued to conduct and perform well into his later years.
