Lechler's parents were both musicians, and they encouraged him to pursue music from a young age. He began playing the piano at the age of five and showed exceptional talent. Lechler's musical education began at the Stuttgart Conservatory, where he studied piano, composition, and conducting. He later continued his studies at the Hochschule für Musik in Munich, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and conductor, Wilhelm Kempff. Lechler's career as a pianist began in the 1950s, and he quickly gained a reputation as a virtuoso performer.
