He was the youngest of four children and grew up in a musical family. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Grinkiavichius began playing the piano at the age of six and showed exceptional talent from an early age. Grinkiavichius studied at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre in Vilnius, where he received his diploma in piano performance in 1952. He then went on to study at the Moscow Conservatory under the tutelage of renowned pianist and teacher Heinrich Neuhaus. Grinkiavichius graduated from the Moscow Conservatory in 1957 with a degree in piano performance. Grinkiavichius began his career as a concert pianist in the late 1950s and quickly gained recognition for his exceptional talent. He won several awards and competitions, including the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 1960, where he was awarded third prize. He also won first prize at the International Piano Competition in Rio de Janeiro in 1961. Grinkiavichius performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the Americas, and was known for his virtuosic performances of works by Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of Chopin's music, and was often compared to the great Polish pianist Artur Rubinstein. In addition to his career as a concert pianist, Grinkiavichius was also a respected teacher. He taught at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre in Vilnius from 1957 to 1993, and many of his students went on to have successful careers as pianists. Grinkiavichius was also a prolific recording artist, and his recordings of Chopin's music are considered some of the finest ever made. He recorded for several major record labels, including Melodiya, Deutsche Grammophon, and Philips. Grinkiavichius received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Lithuanian National Prize in 1974 and the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas in 1998. He was also named a People's Artist of the USSR in 1983. Grinkiavichius continued to perform and teach well into his later years, and remained an active and respected figure in the world of classical music until his death on December 23, 2012, at the age of 84.
