Johannes Nies was born on May 12, 1985, in Berlin, Germany. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a renowned pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Nies showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. He was a prodigious talent and quickly gained recognition for his exceptional musical abilities. Nies received his formal music education at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and pedagogue, Klaus Hellwig. During his time at the conservatory, Nies honed his skills and developed a deep understanding of classical music. He also had the opportunity to perform in various concerts and competitions, which helped him gain valuable experience and exposure. In 2007, Nies won the prestigious International Piano Competition in Leeds, UK, which marked a significant milestone in his career. The competition, which is widely regarded as one of the most challenging and prestigious piano competitions in the world, attracted some of the most talented young pianists from around the globe. Nies impressed the judges with his exceptional technique, musicality, and interpretation, and was awarded the first prize. Following his success at the Leeds competition, Nies began to receive invitations to perform in major concert halls around the world. He made his debut at the Berlin Philharmonic in 2008, where he performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, "Emperor," with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle. The performance was a resounding success, and Nies received critical acclaim for his virtuosic playing and sensitive interpretation. Over the years, Nies has performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, among others. He has also collaborated with many renowned conductors, such as Daniel Barenboim, Riccardo Chailly, and Zubin Mehta, to name a few. Nies is known for his exceptional technique, musicality, and versatility. He has a vast repertoire that spans from the Baroque era to contemporary music, and he is equally at home playing solo recitals, chamber music, and concertos. He has recorded several albums, including a critically acclaimed recording of Beethoven's Piano Sonatas, which was released in 2015. In addition to his performing career, Nies is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. He has taught masterclasses at various music schools and conservatories around the world, including the Juilliard School in New York, the Royal Academy of Music in London, and the Conservatoire de Paris. He is known for his insightful and inspiring teaching style, and many of his students have gone on to have successful careers in music. Throughout his career, Nies has received numerous awards and accolades for his exceptional musical achievements.
