It was founded in 1945 as part of the Dutch public broadcasting system, and has since become one of the country's most renowned orchestras. The HRSO was established in the aftermath of World War II, when the Netherlands was rebuilding its cultural institutions. The orchestra was initially led by conductor Paul van Kempen, who had previously worked with the Berlin Philharmonic. Under his direction, the HRSO quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality performances and innovative programming. Over the years, the HRSO has been led by a number of distinguished conductors, including Bernard Haitink, Edo de Waart, and Jaap van Zweden. These conductors have helped to shape the orchestra's sound and style, and have led it to numerous successes on the international stage. One of the HRSO's most notable achievements was its performance at the 1958 World Expo in Brussels. The orchestra played a series of concerts that showcased the best of Dutch classical music, and received widespread acclaim for its performances. This success helped to establish the HRSO as one of the leading orchestras in Europe, and paved the way for future international tours and collaborations. In addition to its performances, the HRSO has also been recognized for its recordings. The orchestra has released numerous albums over the years, including acclaimed recordings of works by composers such as Mahler, Bruckner, and Shostakovich. These recordings have won numerous awards, including several Gramophone Awards and a Dutch Edison Award. The HRSO has also been recognized for its commitment to contemporary music. The orchestra has commissioned and premiered numerous works by Dutch composers, and has collaborated with leading contemporary composers such as John Adams and Louis Andriessen. This commitment to new music has helped to keep the HRSO at the forefront of the classical music world, and has ensured that it remains relevant and innovative. Today, the HRSO continues to be one of the leading orchestras in Europe. It performs regularly at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, as well as at other venues throughout the Netherlands and abroad. The orchestra's current chief conductor is Karina Canellakis, who took over the position in 2019. Under her leadership, the HRSO is sure to continue its tradition of excellence and innovation in the years to come.More....
