Born in Los Angeles in 1979, von Oeyen began playing the piano at the age of five and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied with renowned pianists such as John Perry and Leon Fleisher, and went on to earn degrees from the University of Southern California and the Juilliard School. Von Oeyen's career as a professional pianist began in earnest in the early 2000s, when he won several prestigious competitions, including the Gilmore Young Artist Award and the Leni Fe Bland Foundation National Piano Competition. These victories helped to establish him as one of the most promising young pianists of his generation, and he soon began to receive invitations to perform with major orchestras and at major concert venues around the world. One of von Oeyen's most notable early performances was his debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2003, where he performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 under the baton of Esa-Pekka Salonen. The performance was widely praised for von Oeyen's technical prowess and musical sensitivity, and helped to cement his reputation as a rising star in the classical music world. He made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2007, performing Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Philadelphia Orchestra under the direction of Charles Dutoit. Von Oeyen's recordings have also received critical acclaim, with his 2012 album of works by Ravel and Gershwin earning a Grammy nomination for Best Classical Instrumental Solo. He has also recorded works by Beethoven, Liszt, and other composers, and his recordings have been praised for their technical precision and emotional depth. In addition to his work as a soloist, von Oeyen is also an active chamber musician and collaborator. He has performed with a wide range of musicians, including violinist Joshua Bell, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and soprano Renée Fleming. He has also collaborated with contemporary composers such as John Corigliano and Nico Muhly, and has premiered several new works written specifically for him. In addition to his early competition victories, he has been awarded the Andrew Wolf Chamber Music Award, the Sony ES Award for Musical Excellence, and the Avery Fisher Career Grant.
