The founding members of the group were Federico Mondelci, Davide Bartelucci, Marco Gerboni, and Gabriele Mirabassi. Federico Mondelci is the group's soprano saxophonist and is considered one of the world's leading saxophonists. He has won numerous awards and has performed with some of the most prestigious orchestras in the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. Davide Bartelucci is the alto saxophonist and has also won several awards for his performances. Marco Gerboni is the tenor saxophonist and has performed with many renowned musicians, including Andrea Bocelli and Luciano Pavarotti. Gabriele Mirabassi is the baritone saxophonist and is known for his unique style that blends jazz and classical music. The group's name, Sassofoni Accademi Quartet, translates to "Academy Saxophone Quartet" in English. The name reflects the group's commitment to excellence and their desire to promote the saxophone as a serious instrument in the classical music world. The group's repertoire includes works by classical composers such as Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven, as well as contemporary composers such as Philip Glass and Astor Piazzolla. One of the group's most notable performances was at the 2010 World Saxophone Congress in Slovenia. The group received a standing ovation for their performance of Piazzolla's "Four Seasons of Buenos Aires." The group has also performed at many prestigious venues, including the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Carnegie Hall in New York. In addition to their performances, the group has also won several awards for their recordings. Their album "Saxophone Quartets" was awarded the prestigious Diapason d'Or award in 2012. The album features works by contemporary composers such as Glass and John Adams, as well as classical composers such as Bach and Mozart. The group's commitment to promoting the saxophone as a serious instrument in the classical music world has led to collaborations with many renowned musicians. In 2014, the group collaborated with Italian pianist Stefano Bollani on the album "Joy in Spite of Everything." The album features original compositions by Bollani and arrangements of jazz standards.
