Born in England in 1955, Tapping grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a young age. His father was a professional violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Tapping started playing the violin at the age of six, but he switched to the viola when he was 14 years old. Tapping studied at the Royal College of Music in London, where he received his Bachelor of Music degree. After completing his studies, Tapping joined the London Symphony Orchestra as a violist. Tapping has also been a member of the Takács Quartet since 2012. The Takács Quartet is a renowned string quartet that has won numerous awards and accolades. Tapping has performed with the quartet in concerts all over the world and has recorded several albums with them. Tapping is also a highly respected teacher and has taught at several prestigious institutions, including the Juilliard School, the New England Conservatory of Music, and the Royal Academy of Music in London.
