El Concierto Español is a classical music ensemble that specializes in the performance of Spanish Baroque music. The ensemble was founded in 1990 by the Spanish conductor Emilio Moreno, who remains its artistic director to this day. Moreno was born in Madrid in 1954 and began his musical studies at the age of six. He studied violin and viola at the Madrid Royal Conservatory and later studied Baroque music at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland. El Concierto Español has performed at many of the world's leading concert halls and festivals, including the Edinburgh International Festival, the Salzburg Festival, and the BBC Proms. The ensemble has also recorded numerous albums, many of which have received critical acclaim. One of El Concierto Español's most notable performances was its 2009 performance of Handel's "Messiah" at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The performance was part of the BBC Proms and was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. The ensemble's performance was praised for its energy, precision, and emotional depth. In 2003, the ensemble was awarded the National Music Prize by the Spanish Ministry of Culture.
