He was the son of a music teacher and began his musical education at a young age. Viñes showed exceptional talent and was sent to study at the Paris Conservatory when he was just 10 years old. Viñes studied under some of the most renowned pianists of his time, including Antoine François Marmontel and Louis Diémer. He quickly gained a reputation as a prodigy and made his debut performance at the age of 14. Viñes continued to study and perform throughout his teenage years, and by the time he was in his early twenties, he had established himself as one of the most promising young pianists in Europe. In 1899, Viñes made his debut in London, performing works by Chopin, Liszt, and Debussy. The performance was a huge success, and Viñes was praised for his technical skill and musicality. He continued to perform throughout Europe, and in 1904, he made his debut in the United States, performing in New York City. Viñes was known for his interpretation of the works of Debussy, and the two became close friends. Debussy dedicated his piano suite "Images" to Viñes, and Viñes premiered many of Debussy's works, including "Estampes" and "Children's Corner." Viñes also worked closely with other composers of the time, including Maurice Ravel and Manuel de Falla. Viñes was a champion of contemporary music and was known for his willingness to take risks and perform works that were considered avant-garde. He was one of the first pianists to perform the works of Arnold Schoenberg, and he also premiered works by Erik Satie and Francis Poulenc. Viñes continued to perform throughout his life, and he was highly regarded by his peers and critics alike.
