David Chupete was born on May 15, 1985, in Madrid, Spain. He was raised in a family of musicians, with his father being a renowned classical guitarist and his mother a pianist. From a young age, Chupete showed a natural talent for music, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. Chupete began his musical education at the age of six, studying piano and violin. He quickly excelled in both instruments, and by the age of ten, he had already performed in several concerts and competitions. However, it was the cello that captured Chupete's heart, and he decided to focus on this instrument. At the age of twelve, Chupete was accepted into the prestigious Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid, where he studied under the guidance of renowned cellist Natalia Shakhovskaya. During his time at the school, Chupete honed his skills and developed a deep understanding of the cello and its repertoire. After graduating from the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía, Chupete continued his studies at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln in Germany, where he studied with cellist Frans Helmerson. It was during this time that Chupete began to gain recognition as a rising star in the classical music world. In 2007, Chupete won first prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians in Moscow, Russia. This prestigious award brought him international attention and opened the doors to many new opportunities. Over the years, Chupete has performed with some of the world's most renowned orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors, such as Daniel Barenboim, Sir Simon Rattle, and Gustavo Dudamel. One of Chupete's most memorable performances was his debut at Carnegie Hall in New York City in 2010. He performed Dvořák's Cello Concerto with the New York Philharmonic, receiving a standing ovation from the audience and critical acclaim from music critics. Chupete has also been recognized for his recordings, which have received numerous awards and accolades. His recording of Bach's Cello Suites won the prestigious Gramophone Award for Best Instrumental Recording in 2014, and his recording of Shostakovich's Cello Concertos with the Berlin Philharmonic won the Echo Klassik Award for Best Concerto Recording in 2016. In addition to his performing career, Chupete is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. He has taught masterclasses at many of the world's leading music schools, including the Juilliard School in New York City and the Royal Academy of Music in London. Chupete's dedication to music and his exceptional talent have earned him numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 2012, he was awarded the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government for his contributions to the arts.
