William David Brohn was born on January 30, 1933, in Flint, Michigan. He grew up in a musical family, with his father playing the violin and his mother playing the piano. Brohn began playing the violin at a young age and later learned to play the viola and piano as well. Brohn attended the University of Michigan, where he studied composition with Ross Lee Finney and conducting with Josef Blatt. After graduating in 1955, he moved to New York City to pursue a career in music. In the early years of his career, Brohn worked as a freelance arranger and orchestrator for various Broadway shows, including "Cabaret," "Crazy for You," and "Ragtime." He also worked on film scores, including "The Wiz" and "Moonstruck." Brohn's work as an arranger and orchestrator earned him numerous awards and nominations, including Tony Awards for Best Orchestrations for "Crazy for You" and "Ragtime." He also received a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s) for his work on "Stars and Stripes Forever" with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. In addition to his work on Broadway and in film, Brohn also composed his own classical music. His compositions include a violin concerto, a piano concerto, and a symphony. He also wrote music for chamber ensembles and solo instruments. One of Brohn's most notable compositions is his "Concerto for Violin and Orchestra," which was premiered by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 1984. The concerto features a virtuosic solo violin part and a lush orchestral accompaniment. It has been performed by numerous orchestras around the world and has been recorded by violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg. Brohn's other notable compositions include his "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra," which was premiered by the New York Pops in 1998, and his "Symphony in D," which was premiered by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 2001. Throughout his career, Brohn remained active as an arranger and orchestrator, working on numerous Broadway shows and film scores. He also continued to compose his own music and was a sought-after guest conductor for orchestras around the world. Brohn passed away on May 11, 2017, at the age of 84. His legacy as a composer, arranger, and orchestrator continues to be celebrated by musicians and audiences alike.
