She was the daughter of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. Her father was a pianist, and her mother was a singer, which inspired her to pursue a career in music. Schmid began her musical training at a young age, studying piano and violin. She showed exceptional talent and was soon recognized as a prodigy. She went on to study at the Zurich Conservatory, where she received a diploma in piano performance. She then continued her studies at the Juilliard School in New York, where she studied with renowned pianist Rosina Lhevinne. Schmid's career as a concert pianist began in the early 1970s, and she quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented pianists of her generation. She made her debut with the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra in 1972, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3. The performance was a huge success, and Schmid was praised for her technical skill and musicality. Over the next few years, Schmid performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. She also performed at major music festivals, such as the Salzburg Festival and the Edinburgh Festival. One of Schmid's most memorable performances was her 1978 performance of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 with the Vienna Philharmonic. The performance was recorded and released on CD, and it remains one of the most popular recordings of the concerto. Schmid was also a prolific recording artist, and she recorded many of the major works in the piano repertoire. Her recordings of Beethoven's piano sonatas and Mozart's piano concertos are particularly highly regarded. In addition to her performing and recording career, Schmid was also a respected teacher. She taught at the Zurich Conservatory and the Hochschule für Musik in Munich, and many of her students went on to have successful careers as pianists.
